CASA 2018 Painting Demonstration Memory Tickler

Ground Preparation

I find that my paintings are much richer when the surface has a subtly, randomly textured broken ground using the process in this video. This is especially the case with paintings on panels. I demonstrate the process in this video.

Following the Painting

 Still unfinished….

Still unfinished….

In this video, I re-enter a painting I did in 30 minutes as an example. The painting was OK, but JUST OK, so I took another look and tried to follow the painting. My initial thought was to use white to block out large areas in order to restructure the composition, but as I began to study the image, I changed horses and used black to create a night sky over a horizon line. This process revealed the possibility of defining distant mesas and letting the yellow bits represent an encampment of some kind. I actually managed to keep up a fairly coherent description of my thought process while painting. When I do finally finish the painting, I will post a photo.
